Having to buy a gift for a baby shower is the same as being single on Valentine’s Day–it’s just brutal! It’s kind of funny actually, back when I was single, I used to wonder what I would spend my time thinking about if I ever got married..now I know. Ah yes, one of my favorite subjects, the obligatory baby shower–anyone have any of those? You know, the childhood friend or the daughter of your mom’s best friend and it’s the frickin social event of the season and anyone connected by six degrees of whoever will be there. What are we supposed to do? How about stay at home and have a shower of my own with jack daniels and Jim Beam?
But seriously, that’s not the answer, well not a good long term answer anyway, but I can dream. I decided not to attend this particular shower because these days torture isn’t my thing so I respectfully declined, and then burned the invitation. Just kidding! But hey, I can’t help the urge. Thank God for anonymity…
You are hilarious, and your stories so moving. I completely understand where you are coming from. Thank you for helping me not feel guilty about my own feelings!
i just skipped my niece’s baby shower yesterday….21 years old, not married, 2nd pregnancy in a year….i spent my weekend making sure i kept myself (AND my husband) busy and now we have a clean and organized basement, clean and organized garage that we can once again park a car in, all the laundry is done, the bedroom, office, bathrooms, kitchen and dining room are SPOTLESS!!
i was feeling guilty for my feelings of anger and bitterness but, once my mother said i was acting “holier than thou” because i wasn’t going to the shower (she is convinced i didn’t go in protest because my niece is not married and i have been vocal at my disappointment in her putting herself in this situation TWICE in a year), i realized that my entire family (who knows about our situation) just does not get it….my mother, two sisters and three nieces had NO issues with getting pregnant….my mother, sisters and two of the nieces actually got pregnant “accidentally” from the wind blowing up their skirts
that’s how easy it was for all of them. and here i am, in self-preservation mode and being called “holier than thou”….i wish!
I can fully relate to this. I am so happy that this site exists. We can tell our true feelings to each other and vent without people looking down on us and telling us that we should NOT feel this way. Thanks for this site.
The great thing about online registrys, you can still get them a gift and have it delivered directly to them. You dont have to show up at the shower, but you are still showing your support. And you can just pick something on their list within your budget without even really looking at it!

I really like what you did with your site. You are awesome!
I was scanning something else about this on another blog. Interesting. Your perspective on it is diametrically contradicted to what I read earlier. I am still reflecting over the diverse points of view, but I’m inclined to a great extent toward yours. And irrespective, that’s what is so super about contemporary democracy and the marketplace of thoughts on-line.
Good post. Interesting read. I read something similar yesterday but for the life of me I can’t remember what the site was though. It’ll come to me – it must be old age
